A tracker that tells same-name remakes apart

On Episodely every movie is tied to its own entry: The Mummy from 1999 and the one from 2017 are two separate titles in your library. Watching one doesn't mark the other, and it doesn't count as a second viewing.

How to do it

  1. Search with the year. Type the title followed by the year, for example "Dune 2021" or "Dune (2021)": results narrow to that year, and each result shows its own.
  2. Add the one you watched. Open it and mark it as watched, or save it for later. The other movie with the same title stays a separate title.
  3. If you import from TV Time. The import compares the English and original titles with the year in the export, and drops any movie released after the date you watched it. If there's still doubt, it doesn't pick at random.
  4. Check your stats. Two remakes watched count as two movies. A rewatch only counts when you watch the same movie again, on a different day.

What it doesn't do

It doesn'tWhy, and what happens instead
Split two movies the catalog keeps as one entryTitle data comes from TMDB: if two movies share one entry there, they're one title in Episodely.
Guess the right movie during importA movie from your export with no safe match isn't linked to an entry, rather than landing on the wrong film with someone else's poster and dates.
Match a show that premiered after you watched itOn import, a show that premiered after your viewing is ruled out: that's how same-name reboots slip in. If doubt remains, the show goes to the list you link by hand.

Frequently asked questions

I watched both the 1999 and the 2017 version. Is that a rewatch?

No. They're two separate movies, each with its own viewing. A rewatch is the same entry watched again, on another day.

How do I find the right remake in search?

Add the year after the title, with or without brackets. Each result shows its year too.

Does this work for shows too?

Yes. Every show is its own entry, and on import a show that premiered after the date you watched it isn't picked instead of the original.

What does it cost?

Nothing. Basic use of Episodely is free and stays free, with no ads.
